MIRROR IN THE SKY
This was new to me.
I've never seen anything like it before.
They were seemingly unbothered by the constant crashing as they continued through the darkness.
Slowly.
Silently.
Unassuming.
Those neon lights flickered, entrancing them like sirens, they motioned, “come hither” and they did.
Not knowing how it would end, forgetting how it started.
“Do you think they realize what's going to happen? They've almost run each other over, blinded, not paying attention.”
“To be honest, I'm not paying attention.”
I watched the steam rise from my coffee, my thoughts elsewhere. How did we get here? How did this start? I ask myself the same questions posed to those sheep below, headed to the slaughter.
We sat in the dark just watching it unfold, hundreds of feet from the rest.
“I think that's the big dipper. Wait, maybe not. It's crazy, in the city you never see any stars, you know?”
His hand rests on my knee extracting me from my thoughts, drawing me back into this moment. I turn and our eyes meet. I take in a different pool of light. These neon lights were alluring.
“Come hither.”
No.
“C o m e.”
I know how this will go.
“You do but you’ll go anyways.”
And I did.
